Employment Opportunity

The Animal Haven, Inc., a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats located in North Haven, CT, seeks a qualified part-time (less than 40 hours) Kennel Assistant. The position reports to the Shelter Manager; responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Animal Care and Treatment

  • Maintaining a high standard of animal care
  • Feeding the animals
  • Medicating animals, as needed
  • Ability to provide minor treatments (including feedings and oral medications)
  • Excellent animal handling and restraint (including ability to handle large, anxious pets)
  • Obtaining fecal and urine samples
  • Assisting with toe nail trims, ear cleanings and anal gland expressions
  • Cleaning or bathing animals, as needed
  • Knowledge of contagious diseases and isolation protocol
  • Maintaining safety when walking and working with shelter dogs and opening cages

Facility Care

  • Daily cleaning of the shelter
  • Maintaining cleaning and other supplies inventory
  • Stocking supplies
  • Cleaning of equipment


  • Excellent customer service
  • Managing phone calls and messages in a professional, timely manner
  • Performing End-of-Shift reports
  • Maintaining accurate animal records
  • Assisting the public with respect to the adoption of the shelter’s animals
  • Ability to work with computers and other office equipment
  • Posting the shelter’s animals on social media

Emergency Situations

  • Ability to respond calmly and quickly
  • Maintaining compassion, sympathy and professionalism during high-stress situations

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds (object or animal)
  • Must be able to kneel, crawl, bend, lift heavy supplies and keep up with the animals you exercise


  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Ability to follow directions with and without supervision
  • Must be dependable
  • Must be very good at multi-tasking and comfortable with working under pressure
  • Ability to recognize or learn to recognize certain behaviors in animals
  • Ability to learn and understand medical terminology
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics (ratio mixing)
  • Must be courteous and friendly, and have a positive attitude with excellent communication skills
  • Other duties as assigned
