The Animal Haven is a no-kill animal shelter in North Haven, Connecticut that takes in adoptable homeless cats and dogs, and takes pride in matching them with loving, permanent homes. It receives no town or government sources of income and operates through private donations, numerous fundraisers and grants. Since 1948, The Animal Haven has been proud to serve the people and homeless pets of Greater New Haven, Connecticut.

The Animal Haven sincerely appreciates having community support to keep our doors open to many adoptable orphaned cats and dogs. Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts.

In 2009, 357 animals (215 cats and 142 dogs) from 29 Connecticut towns were entered into the shelter. All animals are examined by a veterinarian and are sterilized and vaccinated before they can be adopted. Before entering our shelter, dogs must test negative for heartworm and cats must test negative for feline leukemia and AIDS. Also in 2009, 372 pets (222 cats and 150 dogs) were adopted by families living in 44 Connecticut towns and cities.

The Animal Haven advocates responsible pet ownership, mandatory spay/neuter policies, non-euthanasia, education of animal welfare issues, and adult and youth volunteer programs that help to build an overall stronger community.

Mike and the Big Dog...

Michael Kuczenski has been volunteering to walk the dogs at The Animal Haven for a couple years now — Toby (pictured here) being his favorite.

Toby has been a resident of The Animal Haven for over three years —his size and age being major impediments to his finding the right home.

Mike was both thrilled and sad when he found out that Toby had been adopted by a wonderful family. The news that the family had agreed to allow Mike to continue to walk Toby lessened the painful loss of his friend, but when Mike tried to get in touch with them, the family never called back. Despite his disappointment, Mike continued to walk the other dogs at the shelter with a renewed sense of purpose. All of them could still benefit from his special brand of affection.

Then it happened. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Toby was returned to The Animal Haven. And although Mike was terribly sad for his favorite canine, he was silently glad to have his buddy back, the one he didn’t get to say “goodbye” to and the one he thought he’d never get to see again.

When asked why he doesn’t adopt Toby, himself, Mike says, with real regret, that he would adopt the big guy in a heartbeat if he owned a home, but he can’t have a pet where lives now. Bob Grenier of Bones Dog Training (dog trainer for The Animal Haven) said, "The first thing I'll do if I ever hit Powerball is buy Mike a house so he can take Toby home." But Toby doesn’t seem to mind the wait for a lottery win, as long as he gets to walk beside Mike every week.
